THE SPRING PORTFOLIO
Artist Statement:
While creating these pieces I embodied my love of pop-culture, organic shapes, and use of color. While creating my first project, Faith of the Moon, I pursued depth, texture, and shade using the pointillism technique. Making movement with an assortment of dots of different sizes. My fourth project Holy Cathedral expresses my admiration for gothic architecture during the 12th -16th centuries. Colorful windows with a story to tell. I wanted to create that radial shape with my recent knowledge of acrylic paint mixing. Revealing primary colors along with their tones, tints, and shades. Kitten Selfie was my second project this semester. I was able to learn how to use lines to create texture. Using organic shapes and lines to create movement and depth in the hair and background. Kitten Selfie, Kitty Spice Masterpiece, Masterstudy, and Darth Side Eye; all display my liking of pop-culture and artist Kehinde Wiley. Kitty Spice Masterpiece was influenced by the beloved girl band, the Spice Girls. Kitten Selfie features me taking a selfie with none other than Hello Kitty. The colors of my work are also bright, trendy, and unexpected; much like the pop-culture.
You will also witness an alternating relationship between femininity and masculinity. We see a dark gothic shape in the Holy Cathedral paired with colors and warmth feeling. The bubbly sweet pink combined with the hard skull in the street art Kitty Spice Masterpiece. Kehinde Wiley’s Napoleon and the French founder of impressionism Claude Monet’s Camille at the Window influenced my Masterstudy. I combined my learnings or color mixing and pointillism technique using only q-tips to create this project. My last piece created this semester is the painting Darth Side Eye, it combines all skills learned this semester. The depth lines, shapes, and colors can create when applied together. The color theme for this project was a triad of blue, red, and yellow. Mixing only these colors with each other, along with black and white, to create different color variations. Allowing me to create movement with shading. Well, aside from the major shade my husky Vader is also giving in this portrait of him.
